LinkedIn Premium as a student: trials, discounts and alternatives

LinkedIn doesn't list a dedicated student plan or a standing student discount for Premium in India, and pages promising "free LinkedIn Premium for students" are mostly recycled guesswork. What students can really use is the Premium free trial, if your account is eligible, LinkedIn Learning access that some colleges provide, and the free LinkedIn features that matter most when you are hunting for an internship or first job. This page explains how the trial works and how to avoid being billed, when Premium Career is worth paying for as a student, and what free LinkedIn already does well for placements.

LinkedIn Premium student discounts: what exists

Not one LinkedIn lists for India. LinkedIn's help centre describes Premium Career, Premium Business, Premium All-in-One and Premium Company Page, with no student tier. Occasional offers appear on the Try Premium screen for some accounts, so it is worth a look, but don't expect a permanent student price.

Two things students often overlook:

  • LinkedIn Learning through your college. Some universities give students LinkedIn Learning access, which covers the courses part of Premium Career. Ask your library or placement cell.
  • The free trial. If your account qualifies, a trial gives you Premium Career for the trial period, which can be timed for placement season.

Using the free trial without getting charged

LinkedIn's rules are strict: a trial converts to paid unless you cancel, cancelling a trial ends Premium immediately, and after cancelling you can't start another trial for at least 12 months. Time it carefully.

  1. 1Sign in, select Try Premium and check whether a free trial is offered to your account.
  2. 2Choose Premium Career and note the date the trial ends.
  3. 3Set a reminder two days before that date.
  4. 4Use the trial hard during your internship or placement push.
  5. 5To stop before billing, open Me, Premium features, Manage subscription, then cancel. Premium ends straight away for a trial, so do it near the end.

What free LinkedIn already does for students

For most internship and first-job searches, free LinkedIn covers the essentials. Premium mainly adds reach (InMail to people outside your network), insight (who viewed your profile and how you compare with other applicants) and LinkedIn Learning.

When Premium Career is worth paying for

Premium is worth it for a student when you are actively applying to many roles for a month or two and want to message recruiters directly. It is rarely worth keeping all year. The real cost of a trial is forgetting to cancel it: every month you forget costs a full month's fee. Check your exact price on the Try Premium screen; our LinkedIn Premium price page explains why rupee prices only show after login.

What a Premium trial costs, by when you cancel

Illustrative, in months of your plan’s monthly fee, because LinkedIn shows India prices only after login.

Other ways to stretch a student budget

Put the money where student pricing is real: Spotify Student, YouTube Premium Student and Apple Music Student all cost a fraction of their regular plans. There are no active LinkedIn Premium groups on Subspace right now, and LinkedIn's own terms apply to how an account is used. If you need a laptop for a short project in Bengaluru, renting one through Subspace Minutes can cost less than buying.

Frequently asked questions

Is LinkedIn Premium free for students?

There is no standing free student plan. If your account is eligible, you can take a Premium free trial, which converts to paid unless you cancel.

Is there a LinkedIn Premium student discount in India?

LinkedIn doesn't list one. Check the Try Premium screen for any offer on your account, and ask your college whether it provides LinkedIn Learning.

How do I get LinkedIn Premium free as a student?

Use the free trial if your account qualifies, timed for placement season, and cancel before it ends. For courses, your college may already provide LinkedIn Learning.

What happens if I cancel the LinkedIn Premium trial early?

You lose Premium features immediately, and you can't start another free trial for at least 12 months.

Do I need a payment method for the LinkedIn Premium trial?

Yes. LinkedIn takes payment details when you start a trial, because it converts to a paid plan unless you cancel.

Is LinkedIn Premium worth it for students?

For a short, intense job or internship search, it can be. For the rest of the year, free LinkedIn covers what most students need.
