How to manage and cancel app subscriptions on Google Play

Many Android app subscriptions in India, from music and cloud storage to dating and fitness apps, are billed through Google Play rather than by the app itself. That makes Play the one place to see, cancel, pause and restart them. It also explains a common frustration: the app's own settings often have no cancel button, because the app doesn't hold your payment. This guide covers how to find every subscription on your Google account, Google's cancel and pause steps, what happens after cancelling, why uninstalling an app doesn't stop billing, and a quirk specific to India: subscriptions paid by UPI AutoPay can keep showing as active in Google Payments until the billing cycle ends.

Find every subscription on your Google account

Open the Play Store app, tap your profile picture, tap Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. On a computer, go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions. You can also review subscriptions and recurring payments at pay.google.com.

If a subscription you're paying for isn't listed, you're probably signed in to a different Google account. Switch accounts from the profile picture and check again. If it isn't on any account, the app bills you directly or through Apple, so check the app's website or your bank statement.

Cancel a Google Play subscription

These are Google's steps for Android. On a computer, the same subscriptions page works in any browser.

  1. 1Go to your **subscriptions on Google Play** (Play Store > profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions).
  2. 2Select the subscription you want to cancel.
  3. 3Tap **Cancel subscription**.
  4. 4Follow the on-screen instructions to confirm.

Pause instead of cancelling

Some apps let you pause rather than cancel, which is handy for a gym or learning app you'll return to. A pause starts at the end of your current billing period and lasts from one week to three months, depending on the app. To pause: open Subscriptions, select the subscription, tap Manage, then Pause payments, choose the period and tap Confirm. To restart early, select the subscription and tap Resume.

UPI AutoPay subscriptions on Play

If you pay for Play subscriptions with UPI AutoPay, Google notes two things. A subscription you cancel on Play may continue to show as active until the end of its billing period, so don't panic if it still appears. And you can't remove the UPI AutoPay payment method from your Google account until every subscription using it reaches the end of its billing cycle. Once that date passes, you can remove it, and revoke the mandate in your UPI app if it's still listed.

What happens after you cancel

You keep what you've paid for. Google's example: cancel a one-year plan bought on 1 January on 1 July, and it stays active until 31 December with no renewal charge.

How small subscriptions add up

It's worth a quarterly look at the Subscriptions list. Four ordinary plans paid monthly come close to ₹10,000 a year. Where a plan has a family or shared tier, splitting it in a Subspace group usually costs far less than everyone paying solo.
