Guide · Cancel a subscription

How to cancel any subscription in India, from UPI AutoPay to app stores

Every subscription has two halves: the plan with the company and the payment that renews it. Cancelling cleanly means stopping both, in the right order. In India the payment usually runs on a UPI AutoPay mandate, a card e-mandate, an App Store or Google Play subscription, or a telecom bundle, and each one is stopped in a different place. This guide explains how to work out who is billing you, how to revoke a UPI mandate, what RBI's 2026 e-mandate rules let you do with cards, how app-store cancellations work, what the message "there is an active subscription on this account" means, and how to renew a plan later without surprises. For service-specific steps, see the linked guides.

Step one: work out who is billing you

Open the last debit SMS or bank statement entry. The merchant name tells you where to cancel: "Google" or "Google Play" means Play, "Apple" means the App Store, a telecom name means a bundle, and the service's own name means you pay it directly. Cancel the plan there first, so it ends cleanly at the period end, then stop the payment.

How to cancel a UPI AutoPay mandate

NPCI built UPI AutoPay so that every UPI app has a mandate section where you can view, modify, pause and revoke recurring payments. Menu names differ between apps, but the flow is the same.

  1. 1Open the UPI app you used to approve the mandate (it may not be the app you use most).
  2. 2Find the section called **AutoPay**, **Mandates** or similar, usually under your profile or payments settings.
  3. 3Select the merchant, such as the streaming app you’ve cancelled.
  4. 4Choose **Revoke** or **Cancel** (not Pause, which only stops it for a while) and confirm with your UPI PIN.
  5. 5Check the mandate now shows as revoked. Keep the confirmation in case a debit still arrives.

Stop a card subscription under RBI e-mandate rules

Card subscriptions in India run on e-mandates. RBI's Digital Payments – E-mandate Framework, 2026 (21 April 2026) sets the rules your bank must follow. Recurring charges up to ₹15,000 per transaction can go through without an OTP; insurance premiums, mutual fund SIPs and credit card bills get a ₹1,00,000 limit. Your bank must send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before each charge, and must give you a way to opt out of that transaction or the whole mandate. It must also let you withdraw any e-mandate at any time, confirmed with an extra authentication step such as an OTP.

In practice: look in your card's app or net banking for "e-mandates", "standing instructions" or "recurring payments", or use the opt-out link in the pre-debit SMS or email.

App Store and Google Play subscriptions

If an app store bills you, the app itself usually can't cancel the plan. iPhone: Settings > your name > Subscriptions > Cancel Subscription. No Cancel button, or a red expiry message, means it's already cancelled. Android: Play Store > profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > Cancel subscription. Uninstalling an app never cancels its subscription. Full walkthroughs: Apple subscriptions and Google Play subscriptions.

When you see "there is an active subscription on this account"

This message, or something close to it, appears when an app or store finds a live subscription on the account you're signed in with, typically when you try to buy the plan again, remove a payment method or close an account. Work through three checks:

  • Is it cancelled but not expired? A cancelled plan stays active until the end of the paid period. On Google Play, subscriptions paid by UPI AutoPay can show as active until the cycle ends, and you can't remove that UPI method until then.
  • Is it on another account? Search your email for the store receipt and check which Google or Apple account it names.
  • Is someone else paying? A family organiser's plan or a telecom bundle shows as active but can only be cancelled by them.

Renewing a subscription later

To renew a plan you cancelled, Google Play shows a Resubscribe button in Subscriptions; if it doesn't, set the subscription up again in the app. Watch for price changes before you rejoin: JioHotstar, for example, lets existing subscribers keep older prices only while auto-renew stays on, so rejoining means paying today's rate. For plans you only use now and then, a shared group on Subspace shows every renewal date and splits the cost, which beats paying for several solo plans you rarely open.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel a subscription I pay for by UPI?

Cancel the plan in the service’s app or website, then open the UPI app you approved it in, go to AutoPay or Mandates, select the merchant and revoke it with your UPI PIN.

Can my bank stop a recurring card payment?

Yes. Under RBI’s 2026 e-mandate framework, banks must let you withdraw any e-mandate at any time and opt out of a specific charge from the pre-debit notification, which arrives at least 24 hours before the debit.

What does “there is an active subscription on this account” mean?

The store or app sees a live subscription on the account you’re signed in with. It may be cancelled but not yet expired, on a different account, or paid by a family organiser or telecom bundle.

Does revoking a UPI mandate cancel my subscription?

It stops the payments, not the plan. Cancel with the service as well, so the account closes cleanly at the period end instead of sitting with a failed renewal.

How do I renew a subscription I cancelled?

On Google Play, open Subscriptions and tap Resubscribe; if it isn’t offered, subscribe again in the app. Check the current price first, since older prices often don’t carry over.

Is a UPI mandate pause the same as cancelling?

No. Pausing stops debits for a set period and then resumes. Revoke the mandate to end it.
