A pandal-hopping kit

Puja nights are the hardest light a photographer meets all year: dense crowds, mixed colour temperatures from LEDs and lamps, and very little room to step back. Travel light and fast. Tripods are impractical in crowded pandals, so lean on high ISO, image stabilisation and a fast lens instead.

Kumartuli and the run-up to Puja

The weeks before Puja are as photogenic as the festival itself. In Kumartuli's narrow lanes, artisans shape and paint idols in workshops lit by daylight from the street. Ask before you photograph inside a workshop, keep out of the artisans' way, and go on a weekday morning when it is quieter. A 35 mm or 50 mm prime suits the tight spaces better than a long zoom. If you are renting for both Kumartuli and the Puja nights, one full-frame body with a fast prime covers both, and you only need to add batteries and cards for the night shoots.

Weddings, film festival week and offices

Winter weddings run from November to February, and many Bengali ceremonies continue late into the night, so plan batteries and lighting for long hours.
