YouTube Premium family plan: how sharing works in India

The YouTube Premium Family plan costs ₹299 a month in India and covers the family manager plus up to five more people, each on their own Google Account with their own history and recommendations. Filled, that is about ₹50 per person, a third of the ₹149 Individual price. The rules are strict, though: members must live at the same residential address as the manager and be in the same country, and anyone can switch family groups only once every 12 months. For two people, the ₹219 Two-person plan is often the better fit. Here is how the Family plan works, how to add members, and how the costs compare by household size.

Family, Two-person and Individual compared

Every member of a Family or Two-person plan gets full Premium on their own account: no ads, background play, downloads and YouTube Music Premium. Nobody sees anyone else's watch history. If your household only wants ad-free music, YouTube Music Premium has its own family plan for less.

Who can join a YouTube family group

Google's family plan rules are the part most people trip over:

  • The family manager must be 18 or older and pays for the plan.
  • Members must live in the same household, which Google defines as the same residential address as the manager.
  • Everyone must be in the same country or region. A member whose location doesn't match can't join.
  • You can change family groups only once every 12 months, so leaving one family to join another isn't instant.

YouTube's family plan runs on your Google family group, the same group used for family sharing on other Google services such as Google One.

How to share YouTube Premium with family

The family manager sends invitations, and gets an email when someone joins. Members accept from the email or text they receive and sign in with their own Google Account. The manager can remove members from the same settings.

  1. 1Sign in to the Google Account that pays for YouTube Premium and make sure it is on the Family plan.
  2. 2In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture, then Purchases and memberships.
  3. 3Tap your membership.
  4. 4Next to Family sharing settings, tap Edit, then Invite a new member.
  5. 5Enter the person's email address or phone number and tap Send.

Cost per person by household size

For a couple, Two-person is cheaper than Family. From three people upwards, Family wins, and the more seats you fill, the cheaper each one gets. If only one person in the house wants Premium and they are at college, YouTube Premium Student costs less than any shared seat.

Splitting the family plan on Subspace

YouTube Premium has active groups on Subspace, and the live table on this page shows the per-member price. Subspace collects each member's share and holds payment until access is confirmed, which saves the family manager from chasing transfers every month. Google's household rule applies to every family plan member, so a group works for people who live together.
