What to rent for each kind of trek
Match the gear to the coldest night you'll face, not the average. A 10°C sleeping bag is fine for a Karnataka campsite and useless above the snowline. Many Himalayan trek operators supply tents and sleeping bags, so check your itinerary before renting those. In Karnataka, check forest department rules first: many trails need permits or advance booking, and several don't allow overnight camping.
| Trip | Rent | Usually skip |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend Western Ghats trek (monsoon) | Trek shoes, backpack raincover, fleece | Down jacket, snow boots |
| Overnight camp near Bengaluru | Tent, 10°C sleeping bag, foam mattress, camping stools | Heavy winter layers |
| Himalayan winter trek | Down or parka jacket rated −10°C to −18°C, snow shoes, 60 L backpack | Tent and sleeping bag if the operator provides them |
| Hill-station road trip | Fleece or 3-in-1 jacket, binoculars | Tents and mattresses |
Fit and hygiene
Shoes are the one item where fit decides the whole trip. Rent your usual size, try them on with trekking socks at pickup and walk around for a few minutes. If they pinch at home, they will hurt on day two. For sleeping bags, a liner costs a few rupees a day and keeps a rented bag between you and the last user. Jackets are listed as colour may vary, so choose by temperature rating and size.
From pickup to return
Gear problems are easy to fix in Bengaluru and impossible to fix on a ridge. Check everything before you leave the city.
- 1Collect the gear a day before you leave so you have time to check it.
- 2Pitch the tent once at home: count the poles and pegs, and check the zips and rainfly.
- 3Unroll the sleeping bag and check the zip runs end to end.
- 4On the trek, keep down jackets and sleeping bags dry inside a liner or bin bag in your pack.
- 5If gear comes back wet or muddy, tell the owner at return; drying the tent first is good practice.
