FASTag annual pass: who it suits and when it pays for itself

NHAI's FASTag annual pass lets a private car, jeep or van cross national highway toll plazas for a fixed ₹3,075 a year instead of paying at every plaza. The price rose from ₹3,000 on 1 April 2026. The pass lasts one year or 200 trips, whichever comes first, and works at about 1,150 plazas on national highways and national expressways, not on state roads. Since its launch on 15 August 2025, more than 56 lakh users had bought it by March 2026. This page explains how trips are counted, who is eligible and how to buy it. It also shows, with a worked chart, how many crossings you need before the pass costs less than paying toll each time.

What the annual pass covers

The pass is a prepaid plan that sits on your existing FASTag. You don't need a new tag. Once active, eligible national highway plazas stop deducting toll from your FASTag balance until the pass runs out.

  • Validity: one year from activation or 200 trips, whichever is first. After that the tag goes back to normal pay-per-crossing; you buy the pass again to renew.
  • What counts as a trip: at a regular (point-based) plaza, each crossing is one trip, so a return journey through the same plaza is two. On closed-tolling roads, where you pay by distance between entry and exit, one entry-and-exit pair is one trip.
  • Where it works: about 1,150 fee plazas run under national highways and national expressways. State highways and state expressways still charge the normal FASTag toll, so a mixed route can cost something even with the pass.

When the pass beats paying per trip

The maths depends on the toll at the plazas you use. Divide ₹3,075 by your usual toll per crossing to get the number of crossings where the pass breaks even. At ₹100 a crossing that's about 31 crossings in a year, so a weekly return trip through one plaza clears it easily. At ₹50 a crossing you need about 62.

Used fully, 200 trips for ₹3,075 works out to about ₹15 per crossing. Using all 200 in a year means about 17 crossings a month, so the pass suits regular highway commuters and frequent intercity drivers. Someone who drives a highway twice a year is better off paying per trip.

Who is eligible and how to buy it

The pass is for private, non-commercial cars, jeeps and vans only. Your FASTag must be valid, fixed on the windscreen, linked to the vehicle registration number (not just the chassis number) and not blacklisted. The pass can't be moved to another vehicle, and NHAI deactivates passes found on commercial vehicles.

Buy it only on the Rajmargyatra app or the NHAI website. Payment is separate: you can't use your FASTag wallet balance to pay for the pass. It activates on your existing FASTag, usually within about two hours.

  1. 1Install the Rajmargyatra app or open the NHAI website and choose the annual pass option.
  2. 2Enter your vehicle number and check that the linked FASTag is shown and active.
  3. 3Pay ₹3,075 online (not from the FASTag balance).
  4. 4Wait for the confirmation; the pass usually activates within about two hours.
  5. 5Keep some FASTag balance anyway for state highway plazas and for after the pass ends.

Where Subspace fits in

Subspace doesn't sell the annual pass; only NHAI's channels do. You still need a working FASTag balance for state highways and state expressways, for plazas outside the scheme, and for when the 200 trips or the year run out. You can top up that balance on Subspace through Bharat BillPay for most issuers, including SBI and Airtel Payments Bank. See how to check your FASTag balance before a long drive.
