Airtel FASTag: how to recharge an Airtel Payments Bank tag

An Airtel FASTag is issued by Airtel Payments Bank, one of the authorised FASTag issuers on the national NETC list. Like any FASTag, it holds a prepaid balance that toll plazas deduct from. You can top it up in the Airtel Thanks app, or from any Bharat BillPay app, Subspace included, using your vehicle number. This page covers both routes and what to keep ready. It also explains what happens at the plaza when the balance is low or the tag isn't valid, because the toll can rise to 1.25 or 2 times the normal fee. Airtel's FASTag support numbers vary across sources, so we point you to in-app help rather than print a number we couldn't verify.

Two ways to recharge an Airtel FASTag

Airtel Thanks app. Open the FASTag section, sign in with your registered mobile number and OTP, and top up from the dashboard. Airtel Payments Bank says you can pay by net banking, debit or credit card, or UPI.

Any Bharat BillPay app. FASTag recharges are a BBPS category, and "Airtel Payments Bank FASTag" appears as an issuer in BBPS apps. You enter the vehicle number and amount; the money goes to the same tag wallet. This is useful if you don't use the Airtel Thanks app or want all your bills in one place.

  1. 1On Subspace, open Bill payments and choose FASTag.
  2. 2Select Airtel Payments Bank as the issuer.
  3. 3Enter the vehicle registration number linked to the tag and check the details shown.
  4. 4Enter the amount and pay by UPI, card or net banking.
  5. 5Keep the BBPS reference number until the balance updates in the Airtel Thanks app.

What you pay at the plaza, by tag status

Two rule changes decide what happens when your tag can't pay. NPCI's rules from 17 February 2025 decline a toll if the tag was low on balance, blacklisted or hotlisted for more than 60 minutes before the read and is still so 10 minutes after. The vehicle then pays double. And from 15 November 2025, MoRTH's amended fee rules let vehicles without a valid, working FASTag pay 1.25 times the toll by UPI instead of double in cash.

Checking balance and getting help

The Airtel Thanks app shows your FASTag balance and transaction history after you sign in. Many BBPS apps also return the current balance when you enter your vehicle number to recharge. The IHMCL My FASTag app shows the wallet balance by vehicle number as well.

For tag problems, use the help section inside the Airtel Thanks app. We found several different Airtel FASTag numbers on third-party sites and couldn't confirm any of them on an Airtel page. For highway and plaza issues, the NHAI helpline is 1033. Frequent highway drivers can also look at the FASTag annual pass, which works on an Airtel tag if the vehicle is eligible.
