Refer and earn apps without KYC: what’s allowed and what’s a trap
Searching for refer and earn apps without KYC usually means one of two things: you don’t want to share your Aadhaar or PAN with yet another app, or you have seen an offer like “earn ₹1,000 without KYC” and want to know if it is real. The honest answer is that cash you can withdraw almost always involves KYC somewhere, because RBI rules limit what an unverified wallet can do. But plenty of referral rewards need no KYC at all: discounts, coupons, store credits and points. This guide explains why apps ask for KYC, what RBI’s minimum-KYC wallet rules actually allow, which rewards genuinely skip KYC, how Subspace’s referral discount works, and how to spot the scams hiding behind “no KYC” promises.
- Minimum-KYC wallet cap
- ₹10,000 balance
- Full-KYC wallet cap
- ₹2,00,000 balance

Why apps ask for KYC before paying out
KYC is usually a legal requirement attached to money that can move.
- Wallets (prepaid payment instruments). RBI caps what a wallet can hold and do until the user completes full KYC, and bars fund transfers from minimum-KYC wallets.
- UPI. UPI runs on your bank account, which your bank verified when you opened it. Cashback paid to that account is already tied to a KYC-verified person.
- Investing. Brokers must complete full KYC under SEBI rules before opening a demat or trading account, so their referral programmes always involve KYC.
- Fraud and tax. Apps verify users to stop one person creating dozens of accounts to farm referral rewards, and to keep records of payouts.
So when a referral reward is real cash, someone along the chain has checked who you are.
What a minimum-KYC wallet can and can’t do
RBI calls wallets with only basic details “small PPIs”. They are useful for small spends but can’t be emptied into a bank account, which is exactly what most people want from referral money.
| Rule | Small PPI (minimum details) | Full-KYC PPI |
|---|---|---|
| Details needed | OTP-verified mobile, self-declared name and the number of an officially valid document | Full KYC |
| Maximum balance at any time | ₹10,000 | ₹2,00,000 |
| Loading limit | ₹10,000 a month, ₹1,20,000 a financial year | Within the overall balance limit |
| Transfer to bank or cash withdrawal | Not permitted | Permitted |
| Time limit (cash-loading type) | Must convert to full KYC within 24 months, or no further credits | None |
How far a wallet goes without full KYC
The gap between the two wallet types is large. A minimum-KYC wallet can hold a twentieth of what a full-KYC wallet can, and it can only be spent with merchants, never moved to a bank. If a “no KYC” app promises withdrawable cash, ask how it gets around these rules; a legitimate one can’t.
From RBI’s FAQ on Prepaid Payment Instruments (updated 22 Nov 2022).
| Small PPI: max balance | ₹10,000 |
|---|---|
| Small PPI: yearly loading | ₹1,20,000 |
| Full-KYC PPI: max balance | ₹2,00,000 |
Referral rewards that genuinely need no KYC
If you want to earn from referrals without handing over documents, look for programmes that reward you in kind:
- Discounts on your next purchase. Subspace’s referral works this way: when a friend joins through your link, you and your friend both get a discount. The percentage and cap vary by campaign and show in the app.
- Store coupons and app credits from shopping and food delivery apps, usable only inside that app.
- Points or coins that convert into vouchers or discounts.
- Gift vouchers for a specific platform, subject to that platform’s own rules.
These rewards can’t be withdrawn as cash, which is why they don’t trigger wallet KYC rules. Rewards paid by UPI go straight to your existing bank account, so the app may not ask for documents again, though it can if its own terms require it.
Why “₹1,000 without KYC” is a red flag
Real apps paying real cash at that scale follow the rules above. Offers that promise large withdrawable amounts with no verification tend to be one of these:
- Fake earning apps distributed as APK files outside the Play Store, which harvest your contacts, SMS and banking details.
- Task scams run through WhatsApp or Telegram, which pay a little at first and then demand deposits.
- UPI collect-request tricks. A message says you’ve won a reward and asks you to “approve” a request or enter your UPI PIN. Entering a PIN always sends money out; you never need it to receive money.
- Pay-to-join schemes that charge an activation fee and pay old members from new members’ money.
- 1Stop responding and don’t enter any PIN or OTP.
- 2Call the national cybercrime helpline 1930 as soon as possible; quick reporting improves the chance of freezing the money.
- 3File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with screenshots and transaction IDs.
- 4Inform your bank and ask it to block further debits.
Frequently asked questions
Are there refer and earn apps without KYC?
Yes, if the reward is a discount, coupon, app credit or points. Subspace’s referral, for example, gives you and your friend a discount. Withdrawable cash almost always involves KYC, either by the app or by the bank receiving the money.
Is “refer and earn ₹1,000 without KYC” real?
Treat it with suspicion. RBI limits what minimum-KYC wallets can hold and bars transferring that money to a bank. Apps promising large withdrawable cash with no verification are often fake or task scams.
Do I need KYC to receive UPI cashback?
UPI cashback goes to your linked bank account, which is already KYC-verified by your bank. The UPI app may still ask for more details for some offers under its own terms.
What happens if I never complete KYC on a wallet?
A minimum-KYC wallet can hold at most ₹10,000, can’t send money to a bank, and the cash-loading type must be upgraded to full KYC within 24 months or it stops accepting new credits. You can still spend the balance.
Is it safe to share Aadhaar or PAN with a referral app?
Only with regulated apps installed from the Play Store or App Store, and only inside the app’s official KYC flow. Never send Aadhaar, PAN or OTPs over WhatsApp or to an “agent”.
Do I need my UPI PIN to receive referral money?
No. A UPI PIN is only ever needed to send money or approve a debit. Anyone asking for your PIN so you can “receive” a reward is trying to take money from you.
