Paying your water bill online: board, consumer ID and slab rates
Water is billed by whoever supplies your area: a municipal corporation, a state water board or a development authority. That decides where you pay and which ID you need. In Delhi it is Delhi Jal Board, and the ID is a 10-digit KNO. In HSVP sectors of Haryana it is a site code plus a consumer number. Many boards are on Bharat BillPay, which means you can pay your water bill on Subspace by picking your board under Water and entering the ID it uses. Some boards prefer their own portal; HSVP, for instance, currently asks consumers to pay only on its website. This page shows how to find your board, how slab tariffs can make a bill jump, and how to stay clear of late fees.

Find out who bills your water
Look at the top of your last water bill: it names the board or corporation and shows your consumer ID, often called a consumer number, connection number or K number. If you have no bill:
- Check the board’s website. Most have a “know your consumer number” or bill-lookup option. DJB’s, for example, finds your KNO from your mobile number or address.
- Ask your landlord or society. In many apartment complexes the society pays one bulk bill and recovers it through maintenance, in which case you won’t have an individual water bill.
- Check your property tax bill. In some cities water and sewerage charges are levied by the same municipal body.

How to pay a water bill on Subspace
Subspace is a Bharat BillPay app, so the amount comes straight from your board’s system and the payment is posted through BBPS. Subspace isn’t affiliated with any water board; readings, disputes and new connections stay with the board.
- 1Open Subspace and go to Bills, then Water.
- 2Search for your board by name, for example Delhi Jal Board.
- 3Enter the consumer ID exactly as printed on your bill.
- 4Check the name and amount due, then pay by UPI, card or net banking.
- 5Save the BBPS reference from your receipt.
Why a water bill can jump
Most boards charge by slab, and the slab structure can make a small rise in consumption cost a lot more. HSVP is a clear example. Up to 20 KL, each slab is charged separately. Above 20 KL, a single, higher rate applies to the whole consumption. Using 21 KL instead of 20 KL more than doubles the water charge.
DJB works differently: each monthly band has its own service charge and volumetric rate, and the volumetric rate rises from ₹5.27 per KL up to 20 KL to ₹43.93 per KL above 30 KL. Either way, fixing a leaking tap or a running flush is often the cheapest way to cut a water bill.
Illustrative, computed from HSVP’s residential metered rates from 1 Apr 2026: ₹3.04/KL for the first 10 KL, ₹6.08/KL for 10–20 KL, then ₹9.72/KL (up to 30 KL) or ₹12.16/KL (above 30 KL) on total consumption. Water charge only; excludes sewerage and other charges.
| 10 KL | ₹30.4 |
|---|---|
| 20 KL | ₹91.2 |
| 21 KL | ₹204.1 |
| 30 KL | ₹291.6 |
| 31 KL | ₹377 |
Avoiding late fees
Late fees vary by board. HSVP adds 10% of the current bill; other boards print their rules on the bill. A few habits help:
- Pay when the bill arrives, not on the due date, so a failed payment has time to be retried.
- Keep the payment receipt or BBPS reference until the next bill shows the payment.
- If the next bill shows arrears you already paid, send the receipt to your board.
- If the meter wasn’t read, check whether the bill is estimated, and submit a reading if your board allows it.
Paying gas and electricity in the same place makes due dates easier to track; see bill payment apps.
Frequently asked questions
How do I pay my water bill online?
Find your board and consumer ID on your last bill, then pay on the board’s portal or through a Bharat BillPay app such as Subspace by choosing your board under Water and entering the ID.
Where do I find my water bill consumer number?
It is printed on the bill, sometimes called a consumer number, connection number or K number. Many boards also have a lookup on their website; DJB’s finds your KNO from your mobile number.
Can I pay any city’s water bill on Subspace?
You can pay boards that are on Bharat BillPay and listed under Water in the app. If your board isn’t listed, pay on its official portal.
Why did my water bill go up suddenly?
Slab tariffs can jump when consumption crosses a band. With HSVP, for example, going from 20 KL to 21 KL more than doubles the water charge because the higher rate applies to total consumption.
What happens if I pay my water bill late?
Most boards add a late fee. HSVP adds 10% of the current bill. Check your bill for your board’s rule.
Is Subspace a water board?
No. Subspace is a Bharat BillPay app that passes your payment to the board. The board handles supply, meter readings and complaints.
