Bihar bijli bill: check it, understand it, pay it on Subspace
Every Bihar bijli bill comes from one of two state companies: North Bihar Power Distribution Company (NBPDCL) or South Bihar Power Distribution Company (SBPDCL), which covers Patna. Both charge the same tariff, and since July 2025 both give households their first 125 units a month free. Whether your bill shows zero or a few hundred rupees depends on how far past 125 units you go and whether you're a rural or urban consumer. This page explains how to check the bill, how the free units and subsidised rates work for each category, what changed in 2026-27, and how to pay through Bharat Connect (BBPS) on Subspace.
- Free units
- 125 per month
- Urban rate above 125
- ₹4.12/unit
- Rural rate above 125
- ₹2.45/unit
North or South: which company bills you
The company name is at the top of your bill. Both use a CA number as the account ID, and both websites have the same tools: View & Pay Bill for a bijli bill check, Print Receipt for payment proof, and links to the Bihar Bijli Smart Meter app for prepaid meters. Use nbpdcl.co.in or sbpdcl.co.in to match your bill. Both companies share the toll-free numbers 1912 and 1800-202-2813. Detailed guides: NBPDCL bill payment and SBPDCL bill payment.
The 125 free units, explained
Under the state's Mukhyamantri Vidyut Upbhokta Sahayata Yojana, from July 2025 consumption every domestic consumer gets the first 125 units a month free. That covers the energy charge, the fixed charge and electricity duty on those units. A few rules decide what you see on the bill:
- Up to 125 units: nothing to pay for energy, fixed charge or duty.
- Above 125 units: only the extra units are charged, at the subsidised rate for your category, plus duty. The fixed charge applies for the full period, on the higher of your recorded load or 75% of sanctioned load.
- Billing periods other than 30 days: the free allowance is pro-rated as 125 × days ÷ 30.
In 2026-27, BERC also merged the urban slabs into a single ₹7.42 rate, cutting the price of the old upper slab by ₹1.53 a unit before subsidy.
| Category | BERC tariff ₹/unit | State subsidy ₹/unit | You pay ₹/unit | Fixed charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kutir Jyoti (0–50 units) | 7.42 | 5.45 | 1.97 | ₹20 per connection |
| DS-I rural | 7.42 | 4.97 | 2.45 | ₹40 per kW |
| DS-II urban | 7.42 | 3.30 | 4.12 | ₹80 per kW |
BERC FY 2026-27 rate before subsidy vs the rate payable after the Govt of Bihar subsidy for units above 125 a month. Fixed charge, duty and fuel adjustment are extra above 125 units.
| BERC tariff | ₹7.4 |
|---|---|
| Urban (DS-II) pays | ₹4.1 |
| Rural (DS-I) pays | ₹2.5 |
| First 125 units | ₹0 |
Paying a Bihar bijli bill
Bills are due 15 days from the bill date. Pay on time for a 1.5% prompt-payment rebate, and pay online in full for a further 1%. A delayed payment surcharge of 1.5% a month starts if the bill stays unpaid 10 days after the due date.
On Subspace, open Electricity, choose North Bihar or South Bihar Power Distribution Company, enter your CA number, check the name and amount, and pay by UPI. The payment is reported to the company through Bharat Connect. Smart prepaid meters are recharged instead; see smart meter recharge.
